The prospect of adding additional figures on to this extortionate amount after you have left university is almost unthinkable, despite the 'so-called' meagre monthly repayments. Former UWE student, Paul Broderick, is a prime example of a graduate who succumbed to the banks' wicked ways and found himself mounting up more debt than he had bargained for...

The Bankruptcy Diaries is a captivating novel that contains 21 chapters, each aptly titled with cleverly chosen sub titles in accordance to banking related quotes - 'Bankruptcy is like losing your virginity. It doesn't hurt the next time' was no doubt one that made me laugh out loud. Paul Broderick, who tells his tale through the fictional character, Paul Livingson, takes you on a fascinating and gripping journey from the post-university dread of having to delve into the 'world of work' through to the financial difficulties that gradually take hold of his life. Despite his student debts hanging unwantedly over his head, he still wants to live 'the high life' - and realises with a credit card, it all seems too easy.

The book is written in a diary format that allows you to track his financial deterioration over a seven year period. He lives well beyond his means, by attempting to live a life that is just simply unsustainable. Paul Broderick cleverly and nobly conveys one man's loss of control and his willingness to try and regain it again.

The brilliant sense of humour that is continuously conveyed throughout the novel is cleverly contrasted with the darkness of debts. It highlights the materialistic society we live in, and how some of us in British society live well beyond our means, as well as raising awareness of just how corrupt financial institutions really are.

The novel reveals an onset of sleepless nights, severe depression and an impending breakdown of a relationship. As letters from his banks make their reoccurring appearance on his door mat, the reader becomes gradually aware of just how easily these organisations are willing to give their money away - and Broderick demonstrates just how easily it can all be spent. Every time a letter slips though the post confirming an extension on his ever-increasing overdraft or from loan companies offering to lend unrealistic amounts of money, you find yourself desperately wanting to coax the author away from the financial demons, which continuously appear to haunt him throughout. He writes in the novel: 'What a state I'm in. I blame myself for being so reckless, but I'm also angry with the bank for allowing me to repeatedly max out and consolidate. They kept on feeding me until I'd stuffed myself to the point where I could no longer move.' His deterioration in mood is alleviated by the pivotal moment when he eventually sees the light at the end of the tunnel. His realisation of the corrupt state allows him to turn his life around and literally put a middle finger up to the system. It was fascinating to read how Broderick finally decided to take a firm stance against the system, plumping for default in a feat to savour his own health and well-being.

His father stands as a prominent - and a somewhat 'angel on your shoulder' - character throughout the novel, that enforces the disapproving views on credit cards and loan agreements, whilst his jet-setting friends provoke and encourage him to join them on booze-fuelled European ventures. In the words of Broderick, they were 'living like miniature kings on plastic thrones.' His father emphasises on him 'learning the value of money' - a view which reflects the more frugal, older generation, rather than the young.

As you become drawn further and further into the depths of his diary, the manipulating nature of banks and their exploitation of financially vulnerable individuals becomes vividly apparent. Broderick allows the reader to explore and question whose responsibility it is for the financial breakdown that an increasing amount of people seem to be facing. Is it the individual’s responsibility? Or is it more sinisterly the systems ploy to encourage mountains of debt, making slaves of us all?

This is a strongly recommended read to any university student, or anyone experiencing financial difficulties. Paul Broderick was once studying at UWE, accumulating the same standard university debt that we will all be leaving with at some point. Credit cards and overdrafts are too often looked upon as a means to acquire 'free money', but it is not - as Paul Broderick clearly demonstrates in his financial feat with demonic debts.

After reading the novel, I was intrigued to find out more, so I caught up with Paul Broderick to ask his views on claiming bankruptcy, who's to blame for the increase of debt in Britain and what advice he would give to us students who are destined - for what it feels like - a lifetime of debt.
What made you decide to produce your book in a diary format?

‘I experimented with a conventional narrative form at first but eventually decided that the diary format worked particularly well for this type of story where a lot of events are happening quickly and where some - mounting bills and debts – are constantly repeating. I liked the way it leant itself to changes of pace and the way I could bring characters in and out at various points.’

What would be your advice to students who contemplate getting credit cards during/after university?

‘Avoid them at all costs. University is where they suck you in by giving you overdraft facilities and credit cards by normalizing debt so that when you cross over into the world of work you’re already accustomed to having the bank’s debt products and continue to use them. Students tend not to be too concerned with the long-term and are more concerned with having the means to enjoy themselves – well, I certainly was – and don’t really stop to question why banks are happy to let them have credit. Having said that, I do remember wondering why the banks were offering various sweeteners and competing to entice you into banking with them but I suppose it was pretty obvious really.’

What are your thoughts on the rise in tuition fees and the debts students will be facing after they have finished? Do you think it's still worth going to university for?

‘The tuition fee thing is just another part of the neo-liberal, roll back the state agenda where the government washes its hands of a financial burden and education becomes just another industry. I thought it was bad when I graduated with £7000 worth of student loans and a couple of grand on an overdraft but the levels of debt students are forced to incur nowadays seriously changes the balance of work or study equation. However, you’re kind of backed into a corner – aside from the qualifications and skills to be gained that will enable people to have a much more interesting or rewarding life there’s also the ‘university experience’ factor. Despite the debt I think I’d still be keen to go and given my live for the now nature I’m sure I’d think it was still worth it.’

How did you manage your money whilst at university?

‘You won’t be surprised to learn that the answer to this one is awfully - despite having a part-time job.’

Your father seemed to have stood as quite a prominent figure throughout your book. Do you wish you took your father's advice at any point?

‘Again it comes down to attitude to life. Do I wish I’d been sensible, lived a good clean life and maybe owned a property? Despite the travails of the years of chronic indebtedness I had a ball during the good times and life is all about experience, after all, you never know when you’ll step out into the road and get mown down by the number 73.’

How did it feel when you realised that bankruptcy was the only way out of your situation?

‘It felt good to have arrived at a decision after all the prolonged procrastination and agonizing over my situation. How has going bankrupt benefited you?

‘Obviously each person’s circumstances will differ but I’d certainly advise in favour of default rather than spending years of your precious life in slavery and servitude to the financial institutions just to pay back debt (which isn’t even real) to line the pockets of bankers and shareholders. Freeing myself from debt through bankruptcy allowed me to begin living how I wanted to and by that I mean working a lot less and becoming a writer. I doubt I’d have managed it so easily, if at all, had I slogged myself silly for god knows how many years paying it all back. I think I’d have been finished as a person long before I’d made that final payment.’

What do you think are the major causes for the increase in debt in Britain? And who do you think is to blame?

‘Government, banks and individuals are all to blame. Firstly, Thatcher’s deregulation of the city resulted in the development of the credit industry that was handing out cards and loans during the boom years and imploring people to spend, spend, spend! New Labour continued Thatcher’s neo-liberal economic policies so government played a huge part. The banks were the ones handing out the money without caring whether people could pay it back, just so they could increase their profits so they too are also culpable. Finally, anyone who signs an agreement and takes out a card or loan must take individual responsibility for their actions (me included).’

What are you plans for the future? Do you plan on writing any more books? Giving people advice on financial difficulties?

‘I’ve got a few ideas developing in notebooks and will be starting a new writing project soon. In fact, the lovely new installment of student loan has only made me want to spend, spend, spend even more. I've invested a small percentage of my loan in Ebay this last week - there's something about the quick and simple process that Pay Pal provides that just makes clicking 'pay now' so much more easier. Whilst my debit card stays securely in my purse, the guilt of pressing that button just seems to fly swiftly out the window. I've also found that I have a ridiculous habit for 'bidding' - a part of me wants to win the item, but the other wishes that someone would bid higher to do me a favour - to stop me being so frivolous with my money!
Not only have I found Ebay being my subsequent downfall when it comes to 'saving', the little local St Peter's Hospice (it's literally a stone's throw away) is not doing by bank balance any favours either. Can one not pop to the shop for a pint of milk without accidently coming home with a bag full of goodies? I think not!
All in all though, I have brought myself some right little treats, and at such bargain prices as well. I decided that I really wanted a turban - I think it's a beautiful piece of head wear that has stood prominently throughout the last century of women's fashion - so I decided to buy one. A burgundy one of course! I did attempt to buy another one several weeks ago, but a concealed piece of paper through the post, telling you how to knit your own one, indicated that I had not read the item description properly! Note to self: ALWAYS READ THE DESCRIPTION!

Obviously my turban isn't as extravagant as these, but I just think they're absolutely beautiful.

Despite my sheer attempts to stray away from shopping 'high street', I couldn't help but resist these beautiful boots from Topshop. They just go so amazingly with everything. There's no harm once in a while splashing the cash I suppose!

More pictures to follow of my pretty purchases...!

Mystreetchic's Bloggers Christmas Party!

So... Friday night, I attended Mystreetchic's (http://www.mystreetchic.com/) bloggers Christmas party. On arrival I recieved a free goody bag - courtesy of http://www.boohoo.com/ - and LOTS of complimentary cocktails. As nice as they were, the Cranberry juice did get a little bit sickly after a while! At 8pm the fashion show started and the guests feasted their eyes upon a variety of slinky little numbers by BooHoo. Although some of the outfits weren't too my taste - in particular a pair of black sequined hot pants with garish white stars splattered on them - some did get me scouring their website as soon as I got in. Here were a few of my faves:

This picture really doesn't do the outfit any justice, but I absolutely loved it! Just to clarify, it's a navy blue play suit, with white polka dots. The long sleeves made it even more appealing, as I LOVE long sleeved dresses - definitely in-fitting with the season.

I adore lace!

YES... I know this outfit is somewhat revealing! BUT I absolutely love it. High-wasted black hotpants underneath and a black bandeau (not a bra as this model seems to be wearing) would look absolutely perfect for a night out.

Glitsy, glam sequins were definitely at the forefront of the fashion show, as well as several attendees fashioning the look too. I'm not genuinely a huge fan of silver sequins, BUT I did take quite a liking to this combination. Again... Long sleeves really make showing a little bit of leg just that bit more justifiable.

Here are also the fabulous goodies I recieved in my little goody bag:

Batiste shampoo hairspray

Tights (I ALWAYS need tights, especially because I have ladders in every single pair I own!)

Nail varnish by 2True Believe (Follow them on Twitter @2true_believe) - I arrived home last night from my restaurant job with NO chips or smudges in sight!!!!

Tea tree spot balm!!!

Lip balm

AND the most AMAZING lip gloss I think I have ever owned:

A new product by beautycycle and it's a light up lip gloss! That's right! The ideal companion for a night out. As you can see from the image, there is also a mirror panel on the side of the tube.

RRP £12.30 each.

I am already on the look out for the next fashion 'bloggers' party!

Watch this space... Something exciting, yet rewarding. So I have taken the plunge and signed up to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. That's right... I am climbing a mountain. Not just any mountain - a 5,895 meter beast! It's going to be tough (I have heard), both in the lead up to the climb, and the actual climb itself. Plans for fundraising events are already underway - if you have read my previous post about 'swishing', I am going to look at holding a 'swishing' party at UWE for students to come and swap their unwanted clothes for other's. I'm thinking raffles, cake sales, vintage hairdressers...

The New Year is obviously for resolutions, so I am going to quit smoking - for good! I've got my trusty Allen Carr book at the ready, and a penny jar to put all the money I would have spent on cigerettes in, and I'm going to donate that to Childreach.

Childreach is the charity I am climbing for. It's a UK based, grass-roots charity that helps thousands of children in the developing world to improve their access to education, healthcare, child rights and protection. In the past year alone, Childreach has improved the lives of 70,000 children - and this is all thanks to challenges such as this.

Visit my fundraising page at: https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/rebeccaday1#.Tt-jwTsWsNc.facebook

As it says on my page... We already have low-paid women, and now we have cuts in employment.”
Due to the impact of the spending cuts on public sector and part-time jobs, women’s unemployment figures have risen to 71,000 and according to the report, these cuts will disproportionately have a greater impact on women than men, as they are seen to be more likely to claim benefits.
Cuts to housing benefits are subsequently causing a loss of up to £15 a week in income.
Chair of Bristol’s Older People Forum, Judith Brown, stated how it’s the older women who are largely affected by the cuts, due to divisive changes to the state pension age.
Anna Mapson, who was in charge of compiling the report, stated: “We are just hoping to get our voices heard with the local decision makers; we want them to take into consideration our findings, and understand the existing problems of how venerable the women of Bristol are.”
In response, Barbara Janke, the leader of Bristol City Council, quoted: “We are consciously thinking about the three aims of the Equality Duty as part of the process of our own decision-making on our Medium Term Financial Plan.”
“The Equality Duty will be one of a number of factors that we need to consider. We will therefore be looking closely at this report which will assist us in making our recommendations.”

Swishing - Swap until you drop

Clothes shopping can prove extremely detrimental to the bank account – I experienced this first-hand during my first year at university! It’s always too easy to take your debit card for a trip into town and spend money like there’s no tomorrow. But what about when those clothes go ‘out of fashion’ and then start gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe? You are then riddled with guilt at the ridiculous amount of money you spent on just that one outfit, which you no doubt have only worn once!
However, there is a solution that will be sure to rid yourself of the guilt (and your unwanted items of clothing). All hail the relatively new concept that is called ‘swishing’. Before you start thinking that this is some new-alternative dance move that banishes remorse, let me enlighten you!

‘Swishing’ is the exchanging of clothes, where women unite to trade in their unloved items of clothing, for other women’s hidden gems found lurking in their wardrobes. Not only is this a fun and exciting event, but it is also free. That’s right – FREE! And also extremely ethical. Two million tonnes of clothing are brought in the UK every year and a staggering quarter of them end up in landfill sites! Taking part in ‘swishing’ will not only make a dent in this extraordinary figure, but it will also have your purse feeling slightly heavier too. ‘Swishing’ couldn’t prove more convenient and beneficial for students during this current economic down-turn.
Through the official ‘swishing’ website (www.swishing.com), you will be able to find local parties to attend, where you can swap and swish until your heart’s content. However, rules apply! Everyone MUST bring along at least one item of clothing to swap; you are permitted half an hour to ‘browse’ before the ‘swish’ opens; as soon as the whistle blows, you are entitled to grab what you wish.
On Sunday 11 December, Hamilton House in Stokes Croft will be hosting a ‘Pop Up Swap Shop’ in aid of the British Red Cross. Admission is free, and customers can bring as many quality second-hand items as they’d like. Items will be on sale from 50p - £5, helping raise vitally needed funds for the Red Cross. There will also be a vintage hairstylist on hand and photographic studio, AND a knicker-making workshop, where you can make yourself your own unique pair of frilly pants for the winter!
www.redcross.org.uk/Get-involved/Events/Challenge-and-social-events/Social-events/Pop-Up-Swap-Shop for more details on the British Red Cross’ Pop Up Swap Shop event. People wince at the thought of having to wear second-hand clothes, but are more than happy to spend a small fortune on conforming to the high street’s ‘look’. The bustling capital, Bangkok, will be sure to keep you on your feet with it's vast array of market stalls, prestigious temples and buzzing night-life. The renowned Damnoen Saduak Floating Market hosts an embellishment of colourful, fresh foods and souvenirs, cleverly hand picked and crafted by the Thai locals. With nearly 95% of Thailand's population being Buddhist, visiting Bangkok's famous temples are a must. The Grand Palace, which is surrounded by several other temples, presents stunning architecture, gold encrusted Buddhas and intricately made temples that are simply astonishing. Roaming around the temples, you will also discover the monks, fashioning bright orange robes and also offering their blessing inside the temples.
Venture outside the hustle and bustle, and catch the overnight train that will take you north of Bangkok to Chiang Mai - a slightly quieter city, that offers memorable trips and beautiful scenery. Spend up to three days trekking through the breathtaking Mae Tang area, where you can experience overnight stays with the Hill Tribes, elephant trekking and white water rafting. If discovering more temples is on your to-do list, then definitely check out the Doi Suthep Temples, which are nestled at the top of the Doi Pui Mountains. Although you will have to climb the 300 steps to reach the temples, the presence of the Meo Hill tribe lacing the stairway, dressed in beautifully bright embroidered clothes and accessories will heighten your scenic experience. With spectacular views over the city, the venture to the top definitely makes it all worth while.
From Chiang Mai, you can then take a three hour trip and head further north to explore the much recommended town of Pai - a renowned travelling hotspot, where tourists seek extraordinary surroundings and relaxation. Encased in beautiful mountains and forests, the small village of Pai offers you a somewhat hippy vibe, with the occasional Thai local fashioning dreadlocks and providing a reggae scene through their choices of music and warm-hearted, welcoming presence. Throughout the streets you will discover a variety of cheap and cheerful guest houses, enticing market stalls and exquisite restaurants and bars, that play live music. Heading further afield, amongst the gorgeous green valleys, you will uncover canyons, waterfalls and indulgent hot springs.
For those of you who love nothing more than golden sands and crystal clear sea, southern Thailand will be sure to not disappoint. Koh Phi-Phi, a collection of two islands situated just off the south-western coast, provides a selection of magnificent beaches and excellent cuisines. Phi-Phi Leh, the smaller island of the two, is renowned for the destination in which the Hollywood film, The Beach was filmed, and there's no surprise why, with it's sheer cliffs sheltering the magnificent bay, it will definitely count for one of those draw dropping experiences that you'll reminisce on time and time again.
The south-eastern gulf of Thailand hosts islands which will be sure to cater for you on a number of different levels. Koh Pha-Ngan, which holds the infamous 'Full Moon Party', sees herds of backpackers arriving monthly to take full advantage of the unbelievably cheap concoctions of alcohol served literally to you by the bucket and to party on the beach of Hat Rin Nok until early hours of the morning. If seeking relaxation and tranquillity is more on the agenda, the island also offers some beautiful destinations that are slightly less overcrowded, serving as the perfect getaway retreat.
With it's intriguing culture, entwined with it's captivating scenic destinations, affordable luxuries and warm-hearted people, Thailand provides the ultimate travelling experience for any backpacker.

This was my first ever piece of published work, which was for Backpax Magazine - another publication of Sharon Henshall's. Their music holds a political, activist stance that questions authority and motivates its fans to stand up against the system – hence their appropriately named band.
This was the first UK tour Rise Against have done since the release of their sixth album, 'End Game'.

Rise Against were supported by the Polar Bear Club, who opened the show with their chaotic hardcore punk tunes. Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, and his alto-ego, The Nightwatchman, then took to the stage, stipulating an electric vibe throughout the audience. His epic guitar solo was only the start of an astounding evening of an awe-inspiring performance. Towards the end of their set, Tom Morello was joined on stage by Polar Bear Club and Rise Against themselves, to perform a politically charged anthem called World Wide Rebel Songs. The crowd repeated the memorable lyrics, creating a sheer sense of solidarity and unison. With fists raised high, the crowd’s energy generated a buzz that demonstrated a firm stance against the existing economical situation.

Rise Against’s introductory song, 'Re-education (of Labour)', saw the crowds enthusiastically leaping forward, showing wholehearted appreciation of the band's long-awaited performance.

They spoke of how Rage Against the Machine has inspired their song-writing. Tim McIllrath, Rise Against's lead singer, stated, 'Tom Morello has paved the way for bands like ourselves'. And then dedicated 'Hero of War' to Morello to show their appreciation for his lyrical brilliance.

Rise Against also showed support towards to the current occupation movements during their performance, proclaiming how they'd invited activists along from the Occupy Bristol demonstration. Tim McIllrath, spoke of how 'Occupy Bristol is making tomorrow exist for us all', which generated a resounding cheer throughout the crowd. Their thought-provoking words, alongside their influential lyrics proved extremely relevant to the current economical crisis.

After disappearing off stage after the long-awaited track, 'Ready to Fall', the crowd chanted 'Rise Against' several times before the band rejoined the audience to perform their amazing encore. Their final two ground-breaking songs 'Give it All' and 'Saviour' resulted in a frenzied finale, which was aptly introduced by the lead singer speaking of how we, the audience, are the 'future, hope and saviours of tomorrow'.

I took my 13-year-old brother, William, along because they are one his favourite bands... It was his first ever gig, and he absolutely loved it!!! He turned around to me once it had finished, and said, "This is going to be the best gig of my life!" And if I don't say so myself, it's probably one of the best bands I've seen live so far... They were amazing, and if you ever get chance to see them, then DO! We waited around out the back of the O2 Academy after they'd finished to try and meet them. It took over an hour for them to come out, but when they did, I don't think I've ever seen my brother look so happy!

Community piece for Inspired Times Magazine

Despite the sheer devastation that has come out of the London Riots – from people losing their homes and family run businesses, to people even losing their lives – it appears that a great sense of community has arisen. Subsequent to the dreadful scenes of the looting and violence on the television screen, I wanted to learn more. What are the consequences of these riots and has anything been put in place to increase a sense of hope within our communities? From digging deeper, it seems that an overwhelming sense of positivity has grown on a grass-roots level – a realisation that social bonds need to be stronger within communities. Headlines have focused mainly on negative aspects of the riots – it's what sells papers! But what about the positives? Let's join the people who have been working hard behind the scenes, to make vital changes amongst our community – changes that promotes social cohesion and solidarity.

Thanks to the modern-day technology, social networking sites have evidently played a major role in uniting the community. Facebook fan pages such as ‘Post riot clean-up: let’s help London’, hosted a vast response, where people were prompt to pick up their brooms and take to the streets to clear up the devastating mess. Also by typing '#riotcleanup' into Twitter, a portal of useful information would come to light. People have been able to find local events, services and contacts in the riot-affected areas at the touch of a button. “Afterwards there was an awesome spontaneous party to bring the community back to the streets,” explains Tom Harle, involved in a ‘reclaiming the streets’ party. “Locals were playing music and everyone was dancing in the streets.” These celebrations eliminated the negativity that lingered and created an atmosphere, which boasted of determination and optimism.

Projects have also been formed through Facebook to encourage people to help out in the community. Samantha Dean, Founder of Project Rebuild 2011 (www.rebuildproject.co.uk) created the page to build awareness of events, which aimed to raise money for riot victims. As a mother of four with physical mobility issues, Samantha was unable to have any physical involvement in the clean up. Communicating her ideas through social networking sites, therefore, seemed to be an effective way of doing her bit for the community. After being inspired by reading someone’s status, ‘dance don’t loot’, she began getting in touch with various music performers and other entertaining acts, to raise money for Retail Trust’s campaign ‘High St Heroes’. Alia Ayub of One London, events co-coordinator of the project, has been in charge of the running of benefit gigs, comedy shows and raffles. These events have not only proved efficient in gathering money together for the riot victims, but also an effective way of uniting people and communities as well. “One of the most fascinating phenomena that's beginning to grip this city is the spirit of collaboration,” says Alia. “It dawned on me how truly unique a phase we've entered: social networking online leading to social engagement on the ground.”

Retail Trust (www.retailtrust.org.uk), a charity that has helped people involved in the retail industry for over 179 years now, has set up the campaign 'High St Heroes' to gather donations towards helping the riot victims. £50,000 of held funds has supplied immediate help and assistance to individual retailers to help get their life back on track. Retail Trust focuses primarily on the emotional aspects, offering counselling to those who have experienced traumatic stress and violence. “It’s so great to see people approaching us, asking what they can do to help,” says the spokesperson from Retail Trust. “It shows a great sense of community hearing about people doing things off of their own back to help out the people around them.”

Meetings have also been arranged through Facebook groups. One in particular was hosted at the Harringay Club, held in ‘response to the riots'. Thornton’s Budgens – a community supermarket based in Crouch End – created the group. The request to gather people together resulted in a turn out of 72 people, who contributed a diversity of perspectives and ideas. “I really feel that everyone was heard and that by harnessing these perspectives and energy, we can achieve so much,” comments Andrew Thornton, owner of Thornton’s Budgens. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the riots and what actions can be taken to help rebuild the community. Jim Shepley from Hornsey YMCA, was also involved in the meeting. “It was important to acknowledge the positive contribution that most young people make,” he says. “And given more opportunities, they will contribute even more.’ The meeting manufactured a whole compilation of ideas, from ways in which to go about bettering young people's lives to reflecting on any positive outcomes of the riots. Another community meeting has been arranged to discuss the group’s further involvement within the community.

Also focusing on the youth of today is Shaun Bailey, the Co-founder and Director of the charity MyGeneration. MyGeneration has been running since 2006 and takes pride in engaging with youngsters - providing practical support and encouragement. Having been involved in youth work for the past 22 years, Shaun decided to embark on an adventure, which aimed ‘to break the cycle of poverty, crime and ill-health in struggling communities'. What began as a small congregation of young boys in a local cafe, Shaun managed to raise the funds together to expand the charity to what it is today. After speaking with Shaun, he exclaimed how society is too focused on giving negative labels to young people. He puts huge emphasis on motivating them to see past these pessimistic views and not to focus too heavily on their troubled or challenging circumstances. Encouraging the youth to “fight the negatives and push the positives” is something Shaun feels strongly about. “The youths are encouraged to raise their aspirations and set themselves goals, like going to university, and doing something positive with their lives,” he states. “It’s all about promoting more of a can do attitude, rather than a can’t do attitude and giving them a sense of responsibility.” Shaun believes that the London Riots were somewhat ‘unique'. “The youth were, in a way, expressing their rejection from society through committing acts of violence on their communities.” Involving the youth in these particular projects has most certainly opened their eyes to a more prosperous future.

It is clear to see the variety of tremendous efforts that have been put in place to bring a sense of social structure back to the streets. Charities have been working around the clock to ensure that youths are offered a voice, communities are re-connecting, people are being re-homed and businesses are slowly rebuilding. It just goes to show what power we, as people, have in society, and how human kind can upturn society one moment, and turn it all back around the next. The determination has been truly inspirational – instead of dwelling on the negative outcomes of the riots, people have united together with heads – and brooms – held high.

This article I wrote during my work experience at Inspired Times Magazine. Who can officially say that they can literally reach into their wardrobe (or under their bed) and throw on the first thing that comes to hand? If you're agreeing, then I have the greatest respect for you. Students are constantly wanting to be in the know about the latest trends, and what's going to get their fellow friends swooning over their outfits or have them literally reaching for the sick bucket. Personally, I think if you want to parade around campus in a pink frilly tutu, then who is there to stop you? Certainly not the Fashion Police!

Because of my sheer interest in fashion, I decided to go behind the scenes at this season's Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway, to find out what will be the must-have items for this Autumn/Winter. If you have been in awe over the recent trends fashioned at the prestigious London and Milan Fashion Weeks, then Mark Heyes is the man to offer you that affordable, alternative option. If you’re wondering who Mark Heyes is, then you most certainly haven’t watched Lorraine on ITV! He’s crowned as one of Britain’s most trusted stylist and has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga and other inspirational celebrities. He has performed miracles on women who have been seeking a transformation and has really turned their lives around for the better. When meeting with the man himself, his clear kindness and eye for fashion soon became apparent. He kindly propped open his laptop and showed me through an awe-inspiring slide show of what I was going to be seeing during the fashion show. The way he’d found cheaper alternatives of designer outfits from Givenchy, Chloe and Chanel, was simply astonishing and just goes to show that you don’t need to splash out big time to look like you’ve just stepped off the catwalk. “It looks just like Dolce & Gabbana, but with a zero knocked off the price tag!” exclaims Mark.

Not only did Mark give me a fantastic insight as to what to expect in the show, but he also gave me some valuable tips that I just had to share in this feature.

“Combining bright colours with deeper shades is definitely in-fitting with this season”, says Mark. “This is absolutely ideal for students who have splashed out this summer on brightly coloured items of clothing – now they can just take those bright, summery items down a notch with mixing in a few neutral shades here and there.”

Looking back, fashion has always played quite an influential part in my life. Do you remember those brightly coloured trainers and the tracksuit bottoms with poppers down the side? Of course you do and no doubt that’s probably a moment in your life you’d rather forget. But I love looking back on the photographs of me dressed in those horrific outfits and remembering how cool I felt at the time. You never know, with fashion repeating itself so consistently, they may even come back in again at some point!

The fashion world has most certainly taken a step back in time, bringing forth trends such as ‘Mod Squad’ and the ‘Outrageous 80’s’. You’ve no doubt had that conversation with your parents when they claim that they literally had the exact same item of clothing ‘back in the day’! Well yes, they most probably did and what better way to save money than taking that trip up into the attic and discovering their old hidden gems. Charity and vintage shops are also the prime places to pick up items that reflect the latest trends - fur coats and tweed jackets are literally dominating the coat rails as well as the catwalks at the moment. “Coloured tights will be huge this Autumn/Winter, as well as the Peter Pan collar”, says Mark “and saffron is definitely going to be the 'in' colour this season.”

The 12th Bristol Fashion Show was an array of models of all different ages and sizes - it was a relief to see a show which didn't just consist of just young, size zero models. “This show is all about making fashion accessible to everyone”, says Mark. Mark Heyes combined the pieces put forward from retailers at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway to promote glamorous trends from 'Countryside Heritage' to 'LA Glam', and 'Fetish Chic' to 'Masculine Tailoring'. There were fashions from the likes of H&M, French Connection, River Island, and (now don't go screwing your nose up) Marks and Spencer. The models paraded down the catwalk against backdrops of intriguing beauty – one in particular was scene five, where teal and turquoise items of clothing were fashioned against a beautiful peacock-inspired background. Teals are a great way to warm up the skin tone”, explains Mark (great advice for me considering I have the palest complexion!).

The male models (and what they were wearing of course) also featured hugely throughout. Scene (?) saw Republic establishing a 'street' vibe, bringing forth the chequered shirts and wintry boots. I'm afraid to say it's time to put those espadrilles and flip flops to the back of the wardrobe boys, as the Desert and Military boot are making a significant comeback this season. Teaming them up with a pair of chinos or brightly coloured jeans is most definitely the look to be pulling off this Autumn/Winter. Sleek suits made of shiny fabrics also appears to be the 'in' look for this season – ideal for any Christmas parties or functions which are looming ahead.

Accompanying Mark on the show was prestigious hair stylist Andrew Barton. “It's time to get back out those heated rollers, because the beehive is back!” He also went on to explain how it's all about “shocking hair colours” this season. That's right! The pink hair flashes are indeed, making a comeback... Christina Aguilera style!

Whilst meeting with Mark backstage, he also shed some light on getting into the fashion industry and I asked him whether he had any good advice to offer students who were looking at taking that particular career path.

“It was all just down to pure luck”, explains Mark. “No one knew what a stylist was when I was 18, so there was hardly any competition out there to become one.”

The fashion guru himself attended the Glasgow School of Art and worked at several Scottish news papers. Mark then moved to London, where he landed a job working for Channel 4 on the show ‘She's Got to Have it’.

“If you want to get somewhere in life, you need to be prepared to work your bloody arse off!” says Mark Heyes “and you have to be prepared to work for free.” He also expressed his infuriation on how national publications can't function without work experience or voluntary help from students.

“It absolutely sickens me!” exclaims Mark, “sometimes though, it's all about just swallowing your pride and getting on with it.”

Mark Heyes did an absolutely fabulous job at finding alternative look-a-like items from the high street, to make following catwalk trends more accessible to the people of Bristol, and his insight into the fashion industry was truly remarkable, as well as inspiring. The Mall at Cribbs Causeway offers a range of high street and designer shops but there's always the option of finding similar, and more unique items in one of Bristol's many charity or vintage shops that lace its independent streets.

I think Bristol is a fantastic place to express yourself, and what better way to do it than going all out this season on the latest trends. Who cares if you look like you've just stepped out of the changing room of Ann Summers, or just strolled off the set of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? No one does - Bristol's all about being unique! So go on, get on your glad rags and hit the streets in true 'Bristol Fashion' style!

New Job!

So excited to be starting my new job tomorrow as Editor of the WesternEye! After frantically parading down Gloucester Road, with a voice recorder I'd hired from uni, trying to get members of the public and shop keepers to share their views on Vintage shops in Bristol, it was then time to go to the long awaited Bristol Fashion Show. On entrance I was given a glass of Champagne (Marks and Spencers must I add!) and also a little pink sparkley cupcake, which I must say was all very well deserved after the crazy, non-stop day I'd had! I got to my seat just in time and I soon became fully transfixed in my first ever fashion show. Hosted by hair stylist Andrew Barton and top TV fashion stylist, Mark Heyes, they uncovered all the top must-have trends for S/S11. The collections were mainly from John Lewis and Marks and Spencers, with items also from the likes of Monsoon, Dorothy Perkins and Bank... Although some of the pieces fashioned weren't to my particular taste, they were still absolutely gorge and did an amazing job and making the audience aware of the must haves for this spring/summer. There was major emphasis on patterned prints, which have hugely dominated the designer catwalks this season, from floral prints to animal prints, and from large, painterly prints to small, ditsy prints. There are some beautiful maxi dresses out there at the moment, which are going all out on these prints!

I desperately want this one from Topshop!

Another style, which was fashioned in the Dorothy Perkins collection, was 1970's attire. Colour Blocking is also going to be huge this spring, summer... Especially for those who have Balls or Proms coming up. There are some absolutely gorgeous numbers! The one's modelled were from Hobbs... Slightly out of my price range, but those who can afford, one will definitely be a good investment for this summer!

Not only are bold clothing colours the in the thing to have this season, but bold hair colours and hair styles as well. Bright blondes, fiery reds and jet blacks combined with cutting edge fringes and roller curled hair is another in-look to be fashioning. (Think Katy Perry, Kate Winslet's new look, Rihanna... Interviewing a politician was a new occurrence for me, and my knowledge on politics up until this point in time was quite scarce, which only heightened the nerves, but made me feel rather intrigued to find out what really goes on in the life of a politician at the same time.
Collecting me from her secretaries office, Clare Campion-Smith greeted me with a warm, welcoming smile and a much-needed nice cup of tea. Ushering me into her office, conversation as to whether she has had a busy day or not rolled off my tongue and broke the ice instantly. She replied her days were always busy and perched in her chair opposite.

Being involved with the Liberal Democrats since 1973, Mrs Campion-Smith undertook the role of Cabinet Member for Children and Young People only several years ago in February 2009. Since then her priorities in Bristol have provided for the Education sector hugely, creating new schools and opportunities for the growing population of Primary School children and expanding on those schools that already exist. Not only is education her primary focus, but ensuring that social care, youth work, family issues and adult education are also addressed in the Bristol area.
So how did the Essex born Cabinet Member get into politics in the first place, was one of my burning questions to ask. “My husband has been involved in the Liberal Democrats for years and that's where my interest came from.” Clare then further went on to explain how her fellow party member became influenced by his Grandfather, who stood as a Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member of Southport during his youth. Intrigued to find out whether politics featured during her upbringing, Clare replied, “my parents weren't interested at all really in politics, they used to watch the news regularly, but I definitely don't remember being subjected to what was going on politically in our country.”

Through her early years of being a party member, the politician fitted her canvassing adventures between the time of teaching secondary school children Mathematics. “Was your career as a Maths teacher the reason behind you becoming heavily involved in the Education sector of Bristol?” I asked promptly. She replied ironically that she tried to initially avoid becoming involved in that particular sector, but quoted that her previous experience working in education “broadened everything out” and further stated she learnt from what she saw.
Whilst we were touching on the subject of education, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to raise the question on her thoughts of the rise in tuition fees, and whether she thought Nick Clegg was 'unfair' to go against his initial promises. “It's all about surrendering and compromising at the end of the day, and agreeing to the education cuts was something that just had to be done.” She then went on to putting across her views as to why the rise in tuition fees will be of benefit. “The repayment system will be far more progressive, there will be new arrangements which will apply to part-time students, which is ideal for the generation of parents that failed at school, and want to get back into education.” Her response to the coalition was also a positive one. She believed that the Labour Government had become 'tired' and just simply weren't managing the economy effectively enough. She then further went on to explain how the country were 'looking for change' and the coalition was the perfect opportunity to set the country right. “I think we will experience many more coalitions in the coming years” she stated with optimism. “I'm just delighted to get back civil liberty.”

With regards to the political agenda, I wanted to find out what the biggest problems were that Clare faced as Cabinet Member for Education and Young People. “The speed of change” she answered promptly. The retired maths teacher then further went on to disclose how Bristol has the second fastest growing population of primary school children in the whole of the country, which stands as a huge obstacle and therefore involves the next three years focusing primarily on primary school places, especially with statistics showing a 15% rise in primary school applications in the last three years. “Not only is this growing population proving to be a huge strain on placing young children in schools, but is also creating a lot of pressure on social care.” But with more new schools set to be popping up in and around Bristol and also preparations becoming under way for Bristol social workers to be setting up their own practices to spend more time directly with children, Miss Campion-Smith seems to be doing a pretty good job so far at trying to address these issues.

“What are the most significant changes you've noticed in Bristol in recent years and what changes do you anticipate Bristol will go through in the next five to ten years?” was next on the agenda to ask. She believes that education standards have hugely improved, with better quality school buildings and more diversity, such as Faith Schools and independent Muslim schools as well. “I think in years to come, there will be a greater mix of the population, creating a 'buzz' city wide. I believe that there will be a growth of new industries and communities will benefit hugely from economic growth.”

Being a Bristolian for the last 30 years, it is clear that Clare feels strongly about improving the city she lives in. “I've never really settled anywhere else apart from Bristol, I've lived in so many different cities and have moved around constantly because of my work. Bristol just has that really good vibe and buzz to it.”

So, how did Clare balance her time between being a politician and spending time with friends and family I was keen to discover. She revealed it was extremely difficult, much more difficult than being just a teacher. Her weeks consist of no standard days and her weekends comprise of mainly doing action work. “Action work involves going into the community, meeting new people, delivering leaflets and just basically canvassing our ideas and policies.” Miss Campion-Smith didn't appear to seem this was too much of an issue though, with her husband sharing the same hectic lifestyle and both her children having already flown the nest. She revealed her daughter, following in the same academic footsteps as herself, is currently teaching children over the other side of the world in Perth, Australia and her son still lives close at hand with his wife in Bristol. Asking whether she found much of an opportunity to go and visit her daughter, she responded “She's been out there for a year now, and we managed to visit her last year in September/October time, which was lovely.” She then went on to reveal that she intends on paying her another visit sometime next year as well. “Do you think your involvement in education encouraged her to take that particular career path?” I asked. “If anything, I thought it would of put her off,” she replied laughing. “But she seems to be happy with what she's doing in Australia at the moment, whether she'll continue a career in teaching or not is another question.”
Her busy lifestyle soon became apparent when we became slightly pushed for time and Clare apologetically revealed she had to be in a meeting at her ward in Henleaze in the next half an hour. With the interview being unfortunately cut short, I still managed to gain an insight as to how busy a day in politics actually is. With an enlightenment of the challenges which lie ahead for the Liberal Democrat Cabinet member as well, it is clear that her optimism and positive attitude seems to be putting her in good stead for applying beneficial change to the Education sector in Bristol.

Spring Must Haves!

Absolutely LOVING these tailored trousers... Unless you're doing something useful, like medicine, University just seems completely pointless”.

According to Revenue and Marketing Manager from First Line, several buses even had to be diverted, including Services 8 and 9, who were severely affected. Buses then resumed as normal after 6pm.

“It's the Anarchists that ruin it for the students,” spoke an officer on duty, “they're not here to express their views, they're just here to cause trouble and waste police time.”

Ex-Student of the University of the West of England, who was involved in the protest, witnessed a friend being struck in the face twice by a 'heavy-handed' police officer.

Facebook page, 'Second Day of Action Against Fees and Cuts', organised the nationwide protests, warning 'do not come with the intention of being violent.'

Park Street Vintage Shopping!

Me and the Barr have just had another Vintage Shop Sesh, hitting a bit of Park Street this time! I finally found myself a bowler hat... Which I must add have been searching for every since I saw Fearnie fashioning one a few months ago, AND also an absolutely gawjusssssssss Camel coloured Vintage Cloak!! Could have spent some serious money in this vintage store too... http://www.motelrocks.com/shop/ Probably my favourite place I've been to so far in the Brizz, and I am sooooo going back there when my second instalment of student load goes in, in the New Year!!!!

I love Gloucester Road!

Today, me and my flate mate, Miss Hannah Barr, decided to get up nice and early (for once) and treat ourselves to a good bit of Vintage Shop shopping down Glouster Road in Bristol. After a good half an hour or so of trekking up this vibrant, alternative street, we managed to find an amazing little shop called 'Repsycho', which sells Vintage and Retro clothing. I was quite suprised at how well behaved I was actually, considering I only walked out with a chunky knit jumper in Mustard colour, which I must add is freakin' 'lush'!!! The shoes and handbags, and obviously everything else in there, were definitely too much to handle, and I could pretty much see myself spending the rest of my student loan in there!! We also went to another Vintage shop as well called 'The Gold Mine', which was down the bottom of Glouster Road (www.shopdutty.com) and not only the clothes they were selling in there were to die for, but it was also reasonably cheap as well... So I definitely think I will paying there a visit again sometime soon. But first, I'm going to go and hand out a few CV's, so I can actually fund this little addiction with clothes I have!!!

UWE so far!

I've been at UWE studying Journalism and English Literature now for 4 weeks, and I'm having the most amazing time... And have met some truly wicked people! Despite being on the road to the typical 'skint' student lifestyle... The nights out have definitely been worth it! With regards to my courses, I've learnt soooo much already... From how to read poetry to creating my very first article! Today I've been out in central Bristol, doing Vox Pops (Voice of the public in Latin I found out!!!) asking members of the public what their dislikes are about Bristol in general. The main feedback was the traffic and University buses... Which in all honesty I can completely agree with them!! Considering that I am from Southampton, which is reasonably busy... It definitely doesn't quite compare to this place!!!! But all in all, I am actually in love with Bristol...

Hello Blogger!

I returned home early hours of this morning after an amazingly surreal weekend working at the Isle of Wight Festival. What I thought was going to be a weekend of working my arse off for 12 hours a day, in a hectic Carling tent in the Main Arena, actually turned out to be a little bit more glamourous! I was selected to work in the 'Artist' Bar for the weekend, which was situated behind the main stage, and amongst all the Media and Production Teams. There was a constant flow of celebrities wondering around, Artists being interviewed about their performances and up and coming albums, and a riduculous amount of beautiful people fashioning all the latest trends and must have accessories for the Summer. It was like heaven for me!... Not only because of my infactuation with current trends and seasonal must haves, but I am also beginning the adventure of University in September to study Journalism and English... Fashion Journalism definitely being an area I'd like to get into eventually. I seriously thought I couldn't have been in a better place to ask for advice and info on how to get my foot stuck in the door with the whole Journalism profession. It wasn't until I spoke to a couple of ladies who worked for a New York magazine, that told me all about this 'blogging' malarki, and how this could be a great stepping stone for my prospective Journalism career!

I absolutely LOVED this woman's fashion sense... She pulled off the Jumpsuit and black Wellies so well!!!
